Setting personal loss limits for OKX futures before emotions take over
A single bad futures trade rarely ruins an account. What usually does the damage is the next hour: doubling the size to recover, raising leverage because the move must reverse, removing the stop to give the trade room. These decisions feel logical in the moment and look reckless the next day. Writing down personal limits before you trade, and building a few habits around them, protects you from your own reactions. This guide focuses on OKX futures, but the ideas apply anywhere.
Decide limits while calm
Before your next session, write down three numbers: the most you will lose on a single trade, in a day and in a week. Make them amounts you can lose without affecting your life. Keep them somewhere you see while trading, such as a note beside the screen. The point is that you decide them when calm, not after a loss when every number feels negotiable.
Use the platform to enforce them
Trade in isolated margin so each position has a fixed amount at risk. Attach a stop loss to every position as soon as it opens and do not widen it afterwards. Keep only part of your capital in the trading account; transfer the rest to the funding account, where it cannot be used as margin by accident. These settings turn your written limits into something closer to a rule.
Build in a cooling-off step
When you hit the daily limit, stop for the day: close the app and do something else. When you hit the weekly limit, stop until next week and review your trade log before returning. If you notice yourself opening a position immediately after a loss to win it back, treat that as a signal to step away. A short pause costs nothing; a revenge trade can cost a lot.
Review with honesty
Keep a log of each trade with entry, stop, size, leverage, result including fees and funding, and a line on how you felt. Once a week, read it back. Patterns show up quickly: maybe losses cluster late at night, or after a winning streak. Adjust your limits and schedule based on what the log shows. If losses keep exceeding your limits, it may be time to stop trading futures altogether.

Scenario checkpoint
- Write single-trade, daily and weekly loss limits before you trade.
- Use isolated margin and a stop on every position, and keep spare funds out of the trading account.
- Stop for the day or week when a limit is reached, without exceptions.
- Review a trade log weekly, including how you felt, and adjust limits accordingly.
